Nursing Schools Search - What Schools Look For: The Ideal Student
What do schools look for? What is their idea of an ideal student? Is it their number of volunteer activities? Is it their grades? Is it how they did on the SAT, ACT or aptitude tests offered privately by the school? What makes one prospective nursing applicant better than another?

It is a combination of factors. Nurses are in great demand, but the demand on nurses is equally great. More often than not, nursing is not a 9 to 5 position, even in private practice. Nurses work long hours and depending on their chosen field or practice, in very tense situations. An emergency room nurse, for example, may work 12-hour shifts, three days running, then have three days off and three days back on again.

It takes the right type of person to make a good nurse. An even temperament, an eye for detail, solid grades and the commitment to see the program through are all attributes of a successful nursing student. Schools look for all of these qualities when they are assessing applicants. There are also some who will change majors or wash out. Nursing programs are not designed to sugar coat the realities of the nursing field. The classes and requirements are demanding and exact.

Clinical training is another requirement of the nursing program. The prospective nurse will work in situations either in a hospital, doctor’s office or clinic to receive practical experience. Exposure to the pace, the demands, the personalities and the patients themselves can often help students confront whether they are ready to pursue the career of nursing further. Schools look for the grades, aptitude, and volunteer choices as well as review how the prospective student did during the interview.
